Tobacco taxes were paid by "willing users" to support the society as a whole. A large subset of people were paying for things that benefited those who didn't use the product. Early deaths helped make it possible for the US government to underfund programs such as Social Security, as these deaths reduced the money the government had to pay out over time. Given the cancers, heart attacks, and strokes caused in part by tobacco use, the medical industry benefited as well. Tobacco was a malignant cancer for society that we have only been able to debulk so far.

I'd love to see an America without tobacco. Until then, we can make it inconvenient to use in public spaces. If we have to deal with nicotine addiction, we can find less toxic ways of allowing addicts to self medicate. Banning the product won't do much good - we don't another "Prohibition" to stimulate an underground industry. Instead, we should slowly wean this country from the addiction, and encourage the "civilized" nations to do the same.

Until then, we can raise our children to refuse this product, and to associate themselves with people who don't use it....

MMarianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18346866501735405647noreply@blogger.com
