Non-Profit Data Base Project - Proof-of-Concept

At work today after a
product refresh

I have been waiting to write this part of the Data Base Project's saga until I had more to report.  First an update on the original Flagler Museum project.

I delivered the file conversion and did a massive amount of data scrubbing; 8,000 records plus. The project's intent was to convert the older (obsolete) Paradox database file into an Access / SQL database. Being who I am, I did much more. I delivered a fully functional system with queries, data input/edit screens and reports. Once this was seen, the changes request began with me turning a simple project into a massive undertaking.

Many of the request were reasonable and enhanced the overall functionally. However it was not long before the request exceeded logical system capabilities and even went into absurd unreasonable areas. I had committed all along that they owned the source code, so I stepped back, and let the client take over.

I did receive letters of commendation and believe that they are functioning with whatever they have made of the original delivery. I would like to have done more. This is where my over 40 years of system design experience told me to step away. I see the project as a success and the client is in a much better place now, than before.

Which takes me to my "Proof-of-concept" client. I continued working and put to use my non-profit experience to build a generic / fully functioning system.  Success!!!

I had a request to provide a Donor / Client system and I was ready. I converted the new client's data into an Access table and we went live about 6 months ago.

The Polo Museum's Annual
Hall of Fame Induction Gala
They have been great to work with and I have made new friends. Everyone in the office is wonderful to work with. Their suggestions have been reasonable and I delivered more than they ever imagined; membership, GL accounting, volunteer assignments, and linked documents. Not only have I enjoy the coding, but feel that I have helped.

I attended their annual season's event as a guest and had a super time helping. Just being there was such a treat; thank you. "All dressed up in a long dress with someplace to go", the best. Red dresses were everywhere on this Valentine's night gala.

I am ready to take this further. Last evening I attended our Local Chamber of Commerce April's cocktail reception. There I networked and have several good leads for new clients. The "I am willing to give it away" gets attention.

It is nice to still be viable in my field of expertise.  Feels good.  Stay tuned.

Trump Fatigue Syndrom (TFS) - The First 100 Days

The Hallelujah Chorus

Personal Note: I am done with political discourse as a focus. It has become to disconcerting to continue. Complacency rules. Until there is grown swell opposition and a leader emerges, the unimaginable is commonplace.

I hear you queuing up the Hallelujah Chorus. However, I will continue with my Sunday political cartoons. Satire often reveals the absurdity of the current happenings. My daily blog posts will shift toward fashion, outings, and success stories. I also would welcome more guest post contributions. Please...

I want to thank everyone for their loyal readership and comments. I am close to 10,000,000 views. The survey has been helpful in me knowing what you like/dislike. Thank you again.

Here is my today shot and call to action:

The Obvious

Does this scare you?

Back during the campaign, Trump pretended his “Dictator on Day 1” talk was just a joke. One hundred days in, it’s clear he was not joking.

Trump exhibits a madness reminiscent of King Henry VIII. Some theorize late-stage venereal disease, which could explain his mental instability as an obsession with his own grandeur. However, I believe his ego has simply become unhinged, further fueled by fellow egomaniac—Musk. With the erosion of checks and balances, all guardrails are off. Trump is already disregarding lower court rulings and may well defy the Supreme Court if it opposes him, effectively establishing an untethered ruler — a political Coup d'état.

As a fellow blogger stated:

Four years like the first two months have been in the US will render the country fully unrecognizable.

Modern history is rife with strongmen precedents: Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, Bashar al-Assad in Syria, Idi Amin in Uganda, Vladimir Putin in Russia, and Viktor Orbán in Hungary. Many were duly elected, only to dismantle the very democracy that empowered them.

The Strongman Playbook

Once in power, strongmen diminish the free press and undermine opposition. As their reach expands, they rely on intimidation and outright lies. The key tool. A boogeyman—one only they can protect their loyal disciples from. Whether it’s immigrants, transgenders in the bathroom, or ethnic minorities, the strategy remains the same; demean and diminish. Remember, Hitler’s boogeyman were the Jews.

Another fabricated enemy is governmental waste. Yes, inefficiency exists, but which Jenga block will bring down the tower? Florida, the Gulf States, and the East Coast depend on the National Hurricane Center for life-saving storm warnings. Pilots rely on accurate weather reports and air traffic control. We all depend on food inspections, verified pharmaceutical testing, and the U.S. Postal Service. Musk’s reckless gutting of entire departments nearly bankrupted Twitter as advertisers fled. His model, applied to government, would be catastrophic.

Note: Read the Summary of Government Ethics Rules for Special Government Employees—Musk has violated nearly all restrictions.

America’s Democratic Principles in Shreds

One would hope that legislators, regardless of party, would resist the erosion of their constitutional powers. Yet, personal financial gain keeps them complicit. Many enter office with modest means and leave as multimillionaires. The loss of this financial spigot—because enough is never enough—ensures they toe the party line. Impeachment, even in the face of blatant "High Crimes and Misdemeanors", will never occur in the current Congress.

Here, according to my internet research, is just one example: My district congressman, Brian J. Mast (Republican / House / Florida 21) went into office in 2017 with a net worth of $217,000. In 2023, four years later, it is estimated that his new worth is $3.38 million. The candidate in three congressional elections has raised a total of $15,285,257. Although this money cannot be used for personal expenses, its discretionary use is flexible. Also there have been three allegations of "STOCK Act violations"; a federal transparency and conflict-of-interest law.

Side Note: A Pew Research Center survey found that 87% of Americans—across the political spectrum—support congressional age and term limits. Yet, it remains unlikely to ever happen. Why would politicians willingly give up such a lucrative graft.

The Supreme Court: The Final Check… or Not

The judiciary, once a pillar of the non-political democracy, has become so politicized that it has granted near-absolute immunity to the president, even in the case of illegal actions. Future vacancies will likely be filled with even more loyalists—not to the Constitution, but to the president who appoints them for life.

The Question Remains - Is Trump mad?

I can't prove it. I am not clinically qualified. However, madness can be defined as  being out of touch with reality. It means you simply can't comprehend the world as it exist. You make and believe alternate truths (lie). He has made unscientific proclamations about gender. He can't imagine what it's like to be persecuted for your gender or other identity. He fails to understand the consequences of tariff based trade wars. He is allowing governmental essential services to be decimated. He can't imagine the fear of the migrants who may have been here a generation or who were born in the USA feel

We can look at the evidence and say it does not look good for him.

A good start

The Power of the People

Our generation has achieved great things: Ending the Vietnam War, advancing civil rights, forcing a corrupt president from office, and learning that trusting oneself is often wiser than trusting the government.

If enough people recognize the existential threat of strongman rule, change can happen.

Wake up and act! "We the People" must see that America is being destroyed from within. No foreign enemy or boogeyman required. What is happening is not okay. It is not too late. This is a call to action. Speak out!

Not Just Bikes - Fashion

My Fashion Choices

Google AI:

While Harley-Davidson is primarily known for motorcycles, it's also a major player in the apparel industry, including t-shirts. Harley-Davidson offers a wide range of apparel, from casual wear like t-shirts and hoodies to riding gear, and its clothing line has become a fashion statement enjoyed by both bikers and fashion enthusiasts.

My Notes on Harley's future: Harley Davidson, as a company, seems hell bent on destroying itself - again. Historically, poor quality and not responding to its customers (the Japanese bike invasion) nearly did it in. This time it is being out of touch with it's customer base. Same playbook different generation. Their '25 (pre-tariff) prices are unrealistic and there is nothing in their inventory to attract younger riders. One only needs to visit a dealership to see their vast unsold inventory and how deep the hole.

Even if someone is interested, like myself a year ago, the dealer buying process is fraught with lies, fraud and misdirection. "Buyer beware".  I went in with researched numbers and a specific product /cost in mind. I should have never accepted what happened during their buying process. Impulse buying exceed all good sense.

Although never a Harley cult "HOG*" purest, what is happening to an American icon is sad to witness; like a car accident you can not look away from. No longer can it say it is "Made in America"; which was part of its flagship existence. So, it will likely devolved into a limited niche product / ghost, that old guys riminess about over coffee and Metamucil. Maybe it is destine to become just a fashion brand.

Non-Profit Data Base Project - The Next Step

Non-profits are similar in many ways i have learned. Not necessarily having a product to offer they rely on goodwill and staying in touch with their constituents. The art of the repeated touches, solicitations, and "The Ask" are their life-blood. Some donors are dedicated to the cause others have to be courted / nourished along.

This is where accurate record keeping is critical. Ignoring a potential donor means there support will go elsewhere. There are many non-profits willing to accept new donations.

Here is an example: While working as a membership coordinator at a local museum, I had the job of opening all in-coming renewal mail and updating their membership. I noticed that a woman had been a low-tier member for over 20 years. Clearly she enjoyed the museum. I mentioned her to our development manger and said that a "thank-you call / visit" might be in order. On the visit she said, "I wondered when someone was going to contact me? I would like to give a million dollars. I enjoy the museum so much."

Good record keeping is critical. Someone might not be in a position today, however through persistence goodwill, one never knows when the time might be right.

Excel is not a precise relationship record keeper. A database can maintain links between those that attend events and those that are members. And, members that are consistent donors that are capable of major gifts.

My system is written using MS Office Access; an inexpensive, mature platform that is a add-on to The MS Office Suite 365 Professional. My system is self contained in two files. One, the program with forms, reports, and letters. The other, a linked (network) data file that contains multiple tables. Hardware requirements are modest (any system that runs Office 365) and installation is simple as copy two files.

My offer to the non-profit world - Free!

My only requirement is that you have me import your data into the database. (EXCEL to ACCESS / SQL). That way you are up and running immediately with out re-entering all your historical data. Customization and trainings is available. I support contributions / donations, memberships, annual giving, volunteers scheduling, accounting and events. I provide an already written general ledger / income repot for accounting. The source code is provided along with an EXCEL export interface for Word mail-merges / letters.

Interested? Or know a non-profit that has needs. Please, contacted me at rhonds.williams.FL at Gmail. or use the contact form associated with this BLOG.

Non-Profit Data Base Project - The Design

Non-Profit Executive Assistant

After selling my software company in 2000, retirement seemed to be my next career option. Not to be. Quickly, I became very board - Having delivered news papers and working in my grandfather's general store / farm since 10 year old. I needed something to do.  Challenging myself to "Escape" adventures I volunteering at non-profits as Rhonda.

At first, I was shocked as to how under-funder many non-profits were. I saw worthy caused being managed by overworked individuals who cared deeply about their cause; so different from corporate-world enterprises. Although starting out delivering meals, and cleaning up kitchens, it did not take the staff long to discover I had computer skills. "Can you help with this mail-merge?"

Thus I learned several non-profit database systems and was amazed to see many organization struggling with over priced and over complicated software systems. If you are the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the American National Red Cross, maybe justifiable. Local non-profits and museums, although having similar needs, were struggling to justify the monthly software's subscription cost or just giving up and using only EXCEL.

2017 Volunteering
Working the check in desk at a non-profit event

I started building a system about 2006 for the small non-profits with big needs;  donation tracking / acknowledgement letters, member renewals / reminders. and event management (tickets / check in). I put the project on the shelf waiting for a client I could offer it to and complete the coding; real world utilization.

That took longer than I expected and as I detailed yesterday how finally Flagler Museum gave me the opportunity to complete the project. Almost now a complete re-write was needed because the development platform had improved. It was worth it. At least I had a starting template and now additional experience with other systems. I knew what was needed to fulfill the sometimes complex tracking and accounting of gifts.

"Nailing Jell-O to a tree" is an idiom that describes best the extremely difficult or sometimes impossible coding tasks. However, it applies aptly to system's engineering projects. During the final phase, you keep working at it and eventually you can have a finished project. Just a few more nails, and I will be done...

Non-Profit Data Base Project - The Why

Rhonda after one of my design / testing meeting.
 Whitehall, Palm Beach.

Palm Beach History

The Palm Beach area has many worthy attraction; one of which is The Flagler Museum.  Henry Morrison Flagler invented the modern Florida as we know it today. One of America's richest men at the time, he build a railroad system that went for Florida's north boarder all the way to Key West. As he moved south with his railroad tracks, he established towns with hotels and infrastructure to support his new ventures. The transportation infrastructure and the tourism with it's agricultural industries remain even today

Palm Beach became his home during this process and he built a lavish mansion for his third wife, Mary Lily Kenan, and it became their winter home. Whitehall was it's name and even by modern standards it is an amazing destination. Several times it has faced destruction. However, it has survived as one of the premier displays or opulence of that time period. A must see attraction to learn about Mr. Flagler's Florida and see his legacy mansion.

The NY Times in 1902 described Whitehall the way:

... more wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander and more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world."

I always love visiting, especially enjoying the Chamber Music Series during Season. Last year was its 25 year and I attended the first concert.  I have not been to all of the concerts, but make the effort every year to attend as many as I can. The music is always world class.

Whitehall's Chamber Music Series

Over the years I made the acquaintance of the Museum Director and we speak typically at the receptions following the concert. It helps that I am friends with one of the underwriters and attend many as her guest. I actually introduced her to the concert series where she attended as my guest that evening. Her love for the music and ambiance blossomed.

Several season ago I ask the museum director if he used "Raiser's Edge" software to track members and event attendees. He said no, too expensive. I was shocked to know that the Museum used an old database that essentially functioned as an enhanced spread sheet.

When you are ready, "I would love to write you a fully-functioning Member/Donor System". This past season he finally said, "now it is the time".

Three month plus project testing went well up to a point. I am proud of what has been built.  This is my legacy system after many years of system engineering and coding.

Continued tomorrow...

I love going to business meeting where I have a reserved parking place.

Unrestricted, Unapologetic, Effortless

Modest Renegade

A Modest Renegade is someone who embodies quiet strength, reflecting self-assuredness and emanating effortless confidence.

You are a Modest Renegade.

Mid-Length Black Twill Skirt for Men

Skirts for Men

Modest Renegade started off as just a concept…a question. Why do our cultural biases, a social construct, that shift to suit the majority overtime provoke so much fear that we hurt others? Modest Renegade was conceived to defy societal expectations, and embrace diversity and inclusivity. Freedom of choice, expression and individuality applies to everyone.

In a world where certain clothing styles are strictly gendered, we challenge the status quo and celebrate individual expression.

Our goal is to break down gender lines through skirts for men.

Who is a Modest Renegade

Our vision for a Modest Renegade is someone who embodies quiet strength, reflecting self-assuredness and emanating effortless confidence. A Modest Renegade is unapologetic, kind and confident.

Their actions, though rebellious in nature, are not fueled by a desire for attention or a need to challenge others; instead, they let their actions and choices speak for themselves. Despite their renegade spirit, they approach others with humility, treating everyone with respect regardless of background or beliefs. They are approachable, open-minded, and value diverse perspectives.

Their confidence serves as an inspiration rather than an intimidation.

Made to Measure, Made for You

We believe in style that doesn’t just fit—it empowers. That’s why we offer custom sizing tailored to your unique form. Whether you’re looking to perfect the length or fine-tune the fit around your waist on your new favorite skirt, our custom options are here to make sure you’re walking in clothes that feel like a second skin. How to Wear a Pencil Skirt

17 Ways to Style It

Master the pencil skirt look. Our style guide has all the tips and tricks for rocking this chic staple.

If you're looking to up your street style game, pencil skirts are a must. They add a touch of luxury to any outfit and can be styled in so many ways. Wearing a pencil skirt is all about making sure that your outfit is tailored to flatter your figure.

A pencil skirt can be a great addition to any wardrobe, but it can also be intimidating for those who are new to wearing them. If you're not exactly sure how to pull them off, don't worry. We've got everything you need to know about wearing pencil skirts.

MY Note: I love the pencil skirt even more than the dress.  Is it going mainstream for men?  Maybe some day, but not soon. The Jeans pencil skirt is my favorite and I only wish I could wear it more. Below are the bullet points from the article that each are good suggestions with an accompting photo. Well worth studying.

  • Choose the Right Length
  • Go for a Flattering Fit
  • Know Your Shape
  • Consider Your Top
  • Accessorize with Care
  • Pay Attention to Your Side View
  • Start with the Right Undergarments
  • Petite? Tuck it in. Tall? Leave It Out
  • Go for Color
  • Pattern Play
  • Add Interest with Textures
  • Keep It Simple
  • Consider the Weather
  • Get Creative with Your Layering
  • Play with Proportions
  • Accessorize Wisely
  • (#17) Finish with the Right Shoes

#17 - The best way to finish off your pencil skirt outfits is with the right shoes. The type of shoes you wear with your pencil skirt can make or break your outfit.

Wearing the wrong shoes can make you look frumpy or careless, but choosing the right ones can elevate your look and make you appear more stylish and put-together.

As a general rule, you should avoid wearing flats with a pencil skirt. Instead, opt for heels or wedges. This will help lengthen your legs and make you look taller and leaner.

If you’re going for a more casual look, you can wear ballet flats or ankle boots.

And if you’re dressing up your pencil skirt for a night out, don’t be afraid to break out your stilettos. Just make sure you can walk in them comfortably!

With these guidelines in mind, you're ready to start shopping for pencil skirts. But before you do, keep reading for our top tips on how to wear a pencil skirt for any occasion.

Genocide - One Mother's Opinion

The GOP is committing genocide against trans people. My sweet, caring son doesn’t deserve this.

With everything in me, I’m begging you, stand up and speak out for our trans citizens before this goes any further.

Saturday, March 29, 2025

My Note:  Below is a strong very strong statement that has international implications.  Sarah P., a mother, is documenting her 18 year old's plight. It is poignant, raw and to the point. I am going to quote two point from her article and hope you read all she has written also.

________________

First I am going to  define genocide.

Here is the definition from the website of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum [They would know]:

The legal term “genocide” refers to certain acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Genocide is an international crime, according to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (1948). The acts that constitute genocide fall into five categories:

  •  Killing members of the group
  •  Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group
  •  Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction, in whole or in part
  •  Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group
  •  Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group

Right now, transgender people in the US are experiencing items two and three on this list.

SecondHere are just a few of the ways that the Trump administration has, either by executive order or memorandum, very quickly eroded the already threatened rights of transgender Americans since the inauguration on January 20:

  •  The federal government will now only recognize two sexes, male and female, effectively rendering nonbinary identities invalid.
  •  No federal funds shall be used for gender affirming care for trans people under the age of 19. (Two notes about this one – cisgender children can still, and always have been able to, access gender affirming care with the approval of their parents; and currently this executive order has been blocked by the courts through a second temporary restraining order.)
  •  They are in the process of removing all trans people from active military service.
  •  They have mandated that all federal agencies stop recognizing gender identity on forms and surveys. Where it was previously recorded, the new categories will just be blank.
  •  They have deleted the “T” from government websites that refer to LGBTQ+ people and have removed all references to trans and intersex people from federal web pages.
  •  They have banned transgender people from obtaining visas to enter the country, and there have been ongoing reports of trans US citizens being rejected and their documents confiscated when trying to re-enter the country.
  •  They have removed protection from surveillance by the Department of Homeland Security for all homosexual and transgender people.

I’m begging you, stand up and speak out for our trans citizens before this goes any further.

State tells employees to report on one another for ‘anti-Christian bias’

To eradicate 'anti-Christian bias' in the federal government.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is
implementing the executive order

My Note: I am starting to not recognize the America I love.

_______________

The Interfaith Alliance, a left-leaning NGO:

In reality, it will weaponize a narrow understanding of religious freedom to legitimize discrimination against marginalized groups like the LGBTQ community.”

The Trump administration has ordered State Department employees to report on any instances of coworkers displaying “anti-Christian bias” as part of its effort to implement a sweeping new executive order on supporting employees of Christian faith working in the federal government.

The department, according to a copy of an internal cable obtained by POLITICO, will work with an administration-wide task force to collect information “involving anti-religious bias during the last presidential administration” and will collect examples of anti-Christian bias through anonymous employee report forms.

...

The executive order Trump issued in February tasks all federal agencies to root out “anti-Christian bias” from the government.

Feminine Differential - Matching Bra and Panties

Do you match your bra and panties?  It is not an everyday thing for me, but I do enjoy buying and wearing match sets. Just an extra warm feeling while getting dressed. From my experience at the lingerie store I would say about 10-15% do buy with matching in mind.. More than one I have been ask "are there matching panties?"

Black is easy match along with white and many getting these not completely with the "match / match" thought.  Just practicality underneath their outfit.

The site ThirdChoice said this about matching:

While matching underwear sets offer a glimpse into personality, your undergarment choices reveal even more when you consider color palettes. While still being subtle, the color you gravitate towards in your underwear can be a powerful form of self-expression. Whether you lean towards matching sets in traditional classic neutrals or vibrant hues, your color palette speaks volumes.

My experience; At Soma we sell sets (separately) that are designed to go together. Like the set shown, we sometimes have pattern that are an obviously match. Above Soma - "Embraceable Boyshort Panty with Enchanting Lace" and "Embraceable Perfect Coverage Bra", both in PALM PERFECT M CHAMPAGNE.  If you search the soma site that color is used in several other panty type and even night shirt and gowns.  I like it.

These are new items that are part of your summer collection.  I unboxed and hung for display about 75 of the bras a few weeks ago. Be still my heart and thy pay me too! Will I get a set? Likely.

How about you - Do you get match sets?

Why Marc Jacobs Wears a Strand of Pearls Every Day

Marc Jacobs in Conversation About Jewelry, the Diamond District, and Other Uncut Gems

I’ve worn women’s Prada for, I don’t know, 20 years now, and I’ve worn dresses from Comme des Garçons’ menswear collection. And people say to me, “Oh, did Comme do that for men?” And I’m like, “What’s the difference?” Whether they did it for men or women, I’m wearing it. So I’ve always felt like clothing and jewelry have no gender. It's been gendered over the years by people who thought differently, right?

Feminine Differential - Boat Neck

Why Not...

Wikipedia: A boat neck, also called a bateau neck or Sabrina neckline, is a wide neckline that runs horizontally, front and back, almost to the shoulder points, across the collarbone. It is traditionally used in nautically inspired sweaters and knitwear, but is also featured in more elegant cocktail dresses and eveningwear. The style derives from sailors' blouses or sweaters, often with wide navy and white horizontal stripes. [Exclusively Feminine]

My Note: I got this top from Talbots last week and look forward to wearing it.  This is my typical every-day look (skinny jeans) and the shoes, either sneakers, wedge or sandals make the outfit.

Men Wearing Skirts

So you’d never wear a skirt in public? Men, you don’t know what you’re missing

BY: Phineas Harper
Wed 3 Jan 2024 04.00 EST

Phineas Harper in one of his many skirts

My sister has three questions she asks men who say they’re feminists. It only takes one “yes” to pass her test, and yet few do. The questions are: if you get married to a woman, would you (and any kids) take her surname? If you had children with a woman, would you step back from your career to be their primary carer? And, simplest of all, would you wear a skirt in public?

The questions are lighthearted, and not intended to truly cut to the heart of feminist issues, but it’s interesting to see how many men sheepishly give three “no” answers nonetheless. Despite much apparent progress towards gender equity, some conventions around how men feel they must act and dress differently to women are stubbornly persistent, from family to fashion.

Baby names and childcare arrangements are inherently fraught topics, but I’m surprised how many men say they’d never even consider wearing a skirt. Twenty years ago, the curator Andrew Bolton noted that “while women enjoy most of the advantages of a man’s wardrobe, men enjoy few of the advantages of a woman’s wardrobe”, and that “nowhere is this asymmetry more apparent than in the taboo surrounding men in skirts”. While a few celebrities, such as Brad Pitt and LA Lakers basketball player Russell Westbrook, have worn skirts to red carpet events, it’s still vanishingly rare to see normal men wear normal skirts day to day.

Mark a small step towards
gender equality.’

Blokes, you’re missing out! I began wearing skirts six years ago to see if my sister had a point, and it’s only since then I realised what I’d been missing. Skirts are fantastically versatile: thick, pleated and cosy in the winter, light and breezy for summer. They come in a vast array of shapes and characterful styles, leaving the frigid palette of blacks, blues and browns that dominates most male fashion in the dust. You’ll easily find more panache in the skirts section of M&S than in its entire menswear department.

Men who’ve never worn them will often claim skirts are impractical, but this simply isn’t true. Free from complex gussets, skirts are less likely to tear than trousers, but easier to mend and usually straightforward to adapt. “What about pockets?” you cry. True, there’s a long and sexist history in women’s fashion of clothes made without pockets, but times have changed. Margaret Howell and Vivienne Westwood were putting pockets in their skirts decades ago – and these days you can find skirts with decent pockets in Toast, LK Bennett, Cos, and even H&M.

Male fashion is hardly rooted in practicality, either. I love a snappy tie, but it’s hard to think of a more ostentatiously impractical garment than a silk scarf elaborately knotted around the neck. And while blue jeans were once tough workwear, the pairs men buy today are pre-bleached and distressed in factories, with rivets added purely for show. Ultimately, men’s fashion is just as much about aesthetics as women’s, so why not have more fun with it?

Skirts are practical, expressive and, when worn by men, mark a small step towards gender equality no less valuable than women’s long-fought battle to wear trousers. If you need a gateway drug, buy a black kilt on eBay and build your skirt collection from there.

Modern menswear is too often a parade of gloomy conformity, produced by an industry that contemptuously sees male shoppers as predictable and dull. But you don’t have to follow the crowd to be stylish – a man in a skirt signals self-assurance and inner confidence, which are always in fashion.
