Why Are Dresses Better - A Feminine Differential

Talbots - Sleeveless Linen Blend Shift Dress - Damask Swirls

My note: I have been watching this Talbots "Sleeveless Linen Blend Shift Dress - Damask Swirls" for a good part of this season. I knew it would look good on me and the color blocking, swirls would be flattering.  I seldom wear a dress and its original $149 price was hard to justify. My mall's Talbots is right next to my Soma store and more than once shopping after work, I knew it would look good.  Last weekend Talbots had its 70% off markdowns weekend sale and $29.00 was a very good price.  I receive it a few day ago and it is just as imagined, flattering and feminine.  If interested, the price is back up, but watch for another sale.

I remember the girls in my high school wearing "Shift Dresses", Anyone else remember them? Here is a definition of the Shift Dress:

A shift dress is a simple, comfortable, straight-cut dress that hangs loosely from the shoulders, featuring a straight, unstructured silhouette without a defined waistline. Its "shift" or movement comes from its loose drape, allowing for ease and freedom of movement, making it a versatile and timeless garment that flatters most body types.

Why don't we wear dresses more?  Here is a discussion from Google AI:

Dresses are sometimes considered "better" than pants for reasons including increased comfort and freedom of movement due to their non-constricting design, effortless style as a complete outfit, and potential for greater breathability, particularly in warmer weather. Dresses can also create a more traditionally feminine appearance and offer flattering silhouettes that celebrate the body's shape. Additionally, wearing dresses can simplify the dressing process and provide a simple way to feel more polished and elegant.

  1. A few months back, I was at NYC's Penn Station waiting for my train to depart, and took an informal survey of the women commuters . I forget the exact numbers, but roughly , only about 5% of the women were wearing a dress or skirt . It seems that pants are the default choice for most women these days, other than for "dressy" ( aptly named ! ) occasions .

  2. I still love wearing dresses. The summer is a great time since I can wear sundresses easily. I do find that during the winter that I wear pants more except for occasions. Unfortunately, there aren't enough occasions now! I agree completely with your take on shift dresses. They are perfect for my not feminine enough figure.

  5. Why do women no longer wear dresses and skirts? Over the past fifty years, my wife answered this question in many hints and a few forthright statements. I found support for her answers in several practical everyday fashion websites.

My wife has not worn a dress or skirt in decades. Why? In a word, comfort. Her preferred outfit is loose slacks, a loose tunic, and orthotic shoes. Variations for an occasion can be more dressy in terms of better fabrics and colors and patterns. She looks presentable and she feels comfortable. Ironically, her makeup is heavy, designed to thoroughly conceal the long term effects of too much sun in her childhood. Her BMI is 37.

She dislikes dresses because the foundations and accessories are uncomfortable and inconvenient. Shapewear, undergarments, pantyhose, heels, all get denounced in terms bordering on violence. It is uncomfortable enough for someone under age 25 and possessing a BMI of 18. Well past age 70, she has earned the right to be comfortable in her clothes. On many topics, fashion among them, she reinforces in spades her ethnic stereotype of an opinionated, outspoken woman.

One caveat to always remember about on line AI is that it relies totally on what is already on the Internet. Unlike humans, it cannot create. It can only repeat and rearrange. “I read it on the web. It must be true!” accurately describes web based AI.

I know from fifty years with my wife that “a simple way to feel more polished and elegant” is neither true nor simple. GGs as they age have a different mentality than a Crossdresser, a more utilitarian approach to clothing. That governs my wife’s fashion. Sure, she wore dresses and skirts in her youth but the last formal gown she wore was white. After she took off that dress, all of her skirts and dresses soon went to the local charity shop. Her clothes have always had a purpose and an occasion. That never changes.

What is a Crossdresser to do? If you want the job done your way, do it yourself. In my life, there is indeed someone in heels and hose. There is someone in hair and cleavage. And I enjoy it all, even the pantyhose.
