  2. Oh Rhonda! You've done it again! What a great list! I just spent an hour...and I really didn't have an hour to spare...checking out your list. What fun! Thanks for publishing it. You could add "Superman" by Five for Fighting; listen for the transgender reference...it's there. CAG

  3. I have to say that these three songs would never be on my list: Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like A Lady), Lou Reed - Walk on the Wild Side, The Kinks - Lola. The sexual implications and the overall negative connotation actually make my skin crawl a little.

I have heard, more than once, "Dude Looks Like a Lady" being played on a jukebox by some stupid jerk who thinks it's funny because there are trans women in the room. Once, at a karaoke night, a guy asked me to come up and help him sing a song (not an uncommon occurrence, as I am a professional singer). When I heard the opening to "Lola" come over the speakers, however, I walked right off the stage. He was just another "funny" jerk who wanted to make a joke at my expense.

I prefer an affirming song, like Sammy Davis's version of "I've Gotta Be Me," which I have sung many times (from my heart), and it has always been received well. It makes a good and positive statement. Just read the lyrics:

Whether I'm right or whether I'm wrong
Whether I find a place in this world or never belong
I gotta be me, I've gotta be me
What else can I be but what I am

I want to live, not merely survive
And I won't give up this dream
Of life that keeps me alive
I gotta be me, I gotta be me
The dream that I see makes me what I am

That far away prize, a world of success
Is waiting for me if I heed the call
I won't settle down, won't settle for less
As long as there's a chance that I can have it all

I'll go it alone, (if) that's how it must be
I can't be right for somebody else
If I'm not right for me
I gotta be free, I've gotta be free
Daring to try, to do it or die
    I've gotta be me

I'll go it alone, that's how it must be
I can't be right for somebody else
If I'm not right for me
I gotta be free, I just gotta be free
Daring to try, to do it or die
    I gotta be me

  4. To Connie, next time that happens, try what I do. Usually the guy that asks you to do the song is half lit to begin with and is probably doing it on a dare. All he wants to do is piss you off. I too am a professional performer.I'll go up and knock the song out of the park, and in the process show everyone in the place just what he really is, A JERK!!!!!! As a rule, I'll look around and will see the JERK and his buddies slinking out of the place looking totally embarased, as they should be. I always get the last laugh as well as a few drinks.

    1. Ragina, I had no doubt that I could have blown the guy (poor choice of words?:) off the stage. I'm almost as confident in my vocal abilities as I am of my gender identity, and I just don't feel that I need to prove anything to anyone else on either; on my terms, not to be dictated by others. I never would have sung that particular song on my own, so I wasn't going to be coerced into doing it, either. I can hold my own when I'm forced to, but, in this case, I walked away with my dignity to avoid the drama. Lord knows, I don't need any more free drinks, anyway! :-)

  5. We'll stated dear heart and I agree. I just love sometimes to make a jerk eat a bit of humble pie.
