Is Plastic Surgery for You?

THINK PLASTIC SURGERY IS FOR YOU? EXPERT WEIGHS IN ON WHEN NOT TO DO IT.

With approximately 15.9 million surgical and minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2015 and just as many expected to be performed throughout 2016, more people than ever before are getting in on the act. Though it is important to note that while it can and does please the vast majority of those who undergo a procedure, it isn’t for everyone. Before going under the knife, needle or laser it is important to consider the real reason you want to do it.

Possible reasons for undergoing cosmetic surgery could include turning back the hands of time, reconstructive reasons after an accident, cancer, extreme weight loss or other disfiguring occurrence, and correcting a birth defect such as a cleft lip or ear deformity. Though there are a variety of other reasons people give for getting “work” done, if you are considering it to please yourself, you’re probably on the right track. Palm Beach, Florida based, board certified plastic surgeon Vartan Mardirossian, MD, FACS says, “The number one reason to get plastic surgery is to match your inside with your outside appearance. Only then the results will be appreciated and will have the most impact on your self-confidence.”

Dr. Mardirossian sites a number of “red flag” reasons where you should take a step back, reconsider and discuss carefully with your doctor before undergoing any procedure:

The Reason: TO LOOK LIKE A CELEBRITY

Mardirossian says, “Celebrities rise and fall sometimes within a year. Your face stays with you all your life. Why not enhance its own unique beauty? Why do you want to be someone else? Understanding the answer may start from inside-out.”

The Reason: TO FIGHT DEPRESSION

Mardirossian says,”Plastic surgery may increase self-confidence but should not be the only pillar upon which confidence is built. Once the depression is gone, then improving your appearance may “bolster” your victory.”

The Reason: TO PLEASE YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER

Mardirossian says,”Big red flag. If they love you they will love you the way you are. Why did they fall in love in the first place? ”

The Reason: TO GET A JOB

Mardirossian says,”A tricky road but it all depends on the job. Many patients want plastic surgery to look younger and to keep their current job. ”

The Reason: TO GET REVENGE OR MAKE SOMEONE JEALOUS

Mardirossian says, “If a story is over it is over.”

If you’re thinking of undergoing any sort of cosmetic surgical procedure, clearly a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is a good starting place and you need to be honest with yourself and your doctor about why you’re considering making a change. If the answer is that you think it will fix all your problems or greatly improve your life you should hold off and revisit the idea at a later date, however if you know it’s the right choice for you and your doctor agrees, then do your homework, find a board certified surgeon who shares a similar aesthetic with you and go for it.
