Feminine Differential -The Slip

Not Just Lingerie

Slips serve various purposes. They help a dress or skirt hang properly. They protect the skin from chafing against coarse fabrics such as wool; conversely, if the outer garment is made of fine fabric, a slip protects it from perspiration. A slip may be worn for warmth, especially if the dress or skirt is lightweight and thin, whereas in very warm and/or humid climates, a slip made from 100% cotton may be desired. Slips are often worn to prevent the show through of intimate undergarments such as panties or a brassiere. A slip may also be used to prevent a silhouette of the legs showing through clothing when standing in front of a bright light source. Source Wikepedia

As with the bra, there is no male equivalent.

The Slip Dress - Source Be Modish

The women in my childhood home of the 50's were typical in their modesty; a time period when lingerie was also referred to as "Unmentionables". Sneak peeks were only available on the Monday morning clothes lines after washing or in my trusted Sears and Roebuck Catalog. The only exception in my house was the slip. On Sunday morning when getting dressed for church, I did get glimpses of unmentionables as slips seem to an acceptable in-between, of not wearing enough and being almost dressed / ready to go to church.

Fast forward to now and the "Slip Dress", as seen above, was the fashion statement for this past summer. Not just lingerie any more. According to Be Modish:

Slip dresses are sexy, period. And that is the whole point of them. They are comfortable and gorgeous, both at the same time. Slip dresses are an ideal attire choice for the hot seasons as they can beat the heat by wearing them and look absolutely smashing while doing so. Slip dresses are ideal for any kind of occasion and can be worn at formal and casual events both. You can even recycle your slip dresses by pairing them with different garments, looks and accessories. Believe it or not, a slip dress paired with the right accessories and garments can transform your look. In our article today, we will tell you how to wear slip dress in different ways.

I must admit that the slip has been, and will always be, one of my favorite items for feminine "unmentionables".  Let's leave it as a beloved under item.

  1. Rhonda, thank you for your post on slips. Like you, slips are one of my favorite feminine articles of clothing, perhaps my most favorite. Growing up in my formative years in the 80's slips were rather prevalent. Then went out of style in the 90s.

Sad that slips were out of style. I wear a slip on a daily basis under my skirts or dresses (regardless if they are lined or not). I consider a slip as essential as wearing panties. I just would feel unfinished without it.

I agree that slips should not be worn as dresses. They are unmentionables. A slip peak is one thing but that is it.

There is something that is just regal about a slip. It is a shame they are out of style. But, they are always in style with me.
