Girl Scout / Boy Scout

Be Prepared

Boy Scout Motto: On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

In the 1947 Girl Scout Handbook, the motto was explained this way for girls: "A Girl Scout is ready to help out wherever she is needed. Willingness to serve is not enough; you must know how to do the job well, even in an emergency."

Which were you? Which one did you want to be? Was your sister's GS uniform every worn?  Be honest...

Too bad there was no Merit Badge for Walking In High Heels".

  1. Rhonda, I didn’t have a sister, but I was so jealous of the Brownie uniform – especially those cute caps! ;-) Oh well, I had to settle for my second best cub scout uniform…

  2. I wore a Boy Scout uniform just like the one pictured above. Knee-high stockings, held up by garters, and the little green tassel tabs dangling below the sides of the knees did not make for the most macho of looks. The shorts I got at age 13 became shorter each year thereafter - almost hot pants by the time I was 17! At the urging of my scoutmaster, I wore my uniform to school on National Boy Scout Day when I was in the 10th grade. I think that it was the longest school day of my life, with all of the teasing and mockery I had to endure. I probably would have had an easier day, had I made myself up and worn a dress.

BTW, the motto is "Be Prepared," and the oath is what you quoted. I still remember all of them, including the Scout Law. I particularly liked the Scout Slogan, which is "Do a good turn daily." Of course, I put my own twist on it by doing a good job of turning into a girl - not daily, but as often as possible. :-)
