World Trade Center- A Day To Remember

Source: 62 Rare Photos

Pictured here are the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center soon after completion back in October of 1975. New York City was on the verge of bankruptcy around this time and the World Trade Center sat largely vacant, as you can see two homeless men are squatting on the lot.

The Twin Towers became the centerpieces of the World Trade Center complex. Standing at a majestic 110 stories each, they provided 10-million-square feet of office space. But the twin towers were more than just office buildings. Because they were built at a time when the city's future was uncertain, these towers renewed hope, housed businesses, they gave the people confidence and stopped lower Manhattan's rapid decline.

  1. That day and the weeks and months thereafter will live with me forever. I was on my way to downtown Manhattan but go no closer than 42nd St. I sat in an office tower with co-workers watching the news. I had left my car in the Bronx. I walked several miles later that day to get to my car to head home. I lost a first cousin and some friends that day. Have you been to the Memorial. It always makes me cry.
God Bless them all and God Bless America.

  2. Seeing that photo brings up so many thoughts and feelings, silly, sublime, sad and some all at once.

I was at the World Trade complex for a business meeting 20 years ago. I had the thought of going to the top of the World Trade Center but time started to slip away and I thought, "Oh, well, I will certainly be back and can do that in the future."

Well, that was not to be.

Then, it happens that I'm a fan of the old series"Barney Miller," and that the Trade Center can be seen in the opening credits and that's probably going to be one of the the last places to see it.

Then, of course, I think of 9/11 itself. It was one of my proudest days to be a journalist working in Washington DC. As everyone else was flooding out of the city in evacuation, I was moving against the crowds searching out the news of the day as my colleagues and I were working on a special edition.

And, then, finally, sadly, I think about how we as a nation came together so tightly after the attacks and how in the we're lost all that unity and how it's turned to division.
