Optics: (when used with a plural verb) - The way a situation, action, event, etc., is perceived by the public or by a particular group of people.
One week later Tua Tagovailoa suffers another frightening head and neck injury. |
Three Sundays ago, my sometimes football-watching day, I was shocked to see the young Miami Dolphin star quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, stumble after getting up from a brutal hit. Football is a violent sport and as two 200-pound plus muscled athletes collide, I am amazed that there are not more severe injuries. One can only speculate on the long-term damage that comes from multiple less conspicuous concussions.
The optics of this injury and possible medical incompetency is going to haunt the NFL for some time. This optic is generating much day-after-coaching on sports TV and only time will tell if the NFL will become smarter.
However, this blog is not about sports and my passing interest in the game. (pun intended).
As many as eight to ten times an evening, Florida TV watchers are shown political commercials featuring "Drag Queen Story Hour". Front and center in these attack ads are young children being read to by over-the-top drag queens. Republican candidates are calling it "transgender propaganda - without parental consent" and grooming.
This is all part of the Republican candidates' smear-campaign against their Democratic opponents. The tagline, "They want to turn your boys into girls!" This is a lie.
As one article in the American Independent stated:
Anti-LGBTQ Republicans have turned their attention to falsely accusing drag performers of 'grooming' children for sexual abuse... Republicans have been quick to jump on the bandwagon and promise that they will keep kids out of drag shows.
I am not going to show any of these disgusting optics. Much of the progress we have made in seeking LGBTQ+ acceptance, is being eroded by bad optics. We must be smarter!
