Dangerous Rapidly Intensifying Landfalling Hurricanes Like Michael and Harvey May Grow More Common

Dr. Jeff Masters  or Weather Underground 10/12/2018

As Hurricane Michael sped northwards on October 9 towards a catastrophic landfall on Florida’s Panhandle, the mighty hurricane put on an phenomenal display of rapid intensification. Michael’s winds increased by 45 mph in the final 24 hours before landfall, taking it from a Category 2 hurricane with 110 mph winds to an extremely dangerous high-end Category 4 storm with 155 mph winds. It was a disturbing déjà vu of what had happened just one year earlier. On August 25, 2017, Hurricane Harvey rapidly intensified by 40 mph in the 24 hours before landfall, from a Category 1 storm with 90 mph winds to a Category 4 storm with 130 mph winds.

  1. Bill Maher on his show this week mentioned that the panel on climate change has released a report warning that if we don't take dramatic action at this point, climate change will make our planet essentially unliveable by the year 2040.

It didn't have to be this way. Edward Teller--one of the fathers of the atomic bomb--first sounded a warning on climate....in 1959. And Teller was as right-wing as they come.

Moreover, the Senate--under the control of Republicans--first held hearings on climate change in 1986.

So sadly, we've had time to address this. Now, to address it, we have to take extremely drastic measures.

Republicans today complain addressing climate will do too much damage to the economy. Well, what do you think is going to happen to the economy when have multiple 500-year storms ever year?

Addressing climate today won't damage the economy so much as change it. Sure, big petroleum companies will have to adapt or die. But if these companies were smart they would move from petroleum to non-carbon energy.

People wouldn't necessarily have to lose jobs so much as change jobs.

I find it outrageous that today a bunch of old white men basically say, "We don't need to do anything, we'll be dead by then."

What about their children? Grandchildren? What kind of life is being left for them?

It's no wonder that young people today are the ones fighting so hard to address climate.

Trans or not, we are facing a world with no escapes if we have to live through massive flooding, killer storms and deadly heat waves.

There have already been heat waves in the Middle East with temperatures around 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

That is what we are in for just in the next decade or so.

We really need to do something *now*.

    2. Well, thanks for letting me spout off. We all need to vote next month.

If you live in a state (particularly a red state) where Republicans have enacted voter suppression (ie voter ID or exact match or have just been purging voter rolls) and you think your vote is in danger, remember to call (866) OUR-VOTE.

  2. Here is a good recent report on the state of climate change and what we need to do:
